Quick tipping etiquette (US)
- Restaurants (sit-down): 15–20% of the pre-tax bill; 20%+ for great service.
- Delivery drivers: 10–15%, at least a few dollars.
- Bars & coffee shops: $1–2 per drink or 15–20%.
- Large groups: check the bill — many restaurants add an automatic gratuity for parties of 6–8+.

About This Tip Calculator
This tip calculator turns your restaurant bill into the tip and the total in one step — and splits it fairly when the check is shared. Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, say how many people are paying, and you get the tip amount, the total, and each person's share. No more napkin math at the table while the server waits.
How much should you tip?
- 15% — the long-standing standard for adequate service at a sit-down restaurant.
- 18–20% — the modern norm for good service in most of the U.S., and the rate many servers rely on.
- 22–25% — for excellent service, large parties, or complicated orders.
- Counter service and takeout: not required, but 10% or a few dollars is a kind gesture for good work.
A few things worth knowing. In most states, tipped servers earn a lower direct wage because tips are expected to make up the difference, which is why tipping at sit-down restaurants is part of the real cost of the meal. Tip on the pre-tax amount if you want to be precise — many people simply tip on the total, which is a little more generous and a little easier. For a group bill, splitting evenly is simplest, but this calculator's per-person numbers assume an even split; if one person ordered the steak and another a salad, most groups either accept the even split as the price of a good time or settle the difference separately.
Frequently asked questions
What is 20% of a $63.40 bill? $12.68 — for a quick mental check, move the decimal (10% is $6.34) and double it. The calculator above gives you the exact figure and the total, $76.08.
Do you tip on delivery apps? Yes — the driver's tip is separate from the app's fees. The standard $3–$5 minimum or 15–20% of the order applies, and cash in hand is always appreciated.
